Green illa
At illa Carlemany we are working for a greener, cleaner, more sustainable future, respectful of the available resources and the environment.
It all adds up to a greener future.
First to be awarded feda’s green energy seal
Since November 2022, illa Carlemany shopping centre has carried the Llum Verda (Green Energy) seal issued by FEDA, which certifies the use of energy from renewable sources. FEDA supplies energy from its hydroelectric power plant as well as renewable sources in Spain and France, with every kW certified.
Having been awarded the Llum Verda seal, illa Carlemany became the first shopping centre in the country to join the initiative, demonstrating its commitment to the development of renewable energies and the clean energy transition.
It all adds up to energy savings
While having the Llum Verda seal does not necessarily guarantee savings and responsible energy consumption, the fact is that implementing measures for responsible consumption, energy savings and promoting renewable energies helps to build a greener, cleaner, more sustainable future, respectful of the available resources. Which is why at illa Carlemany, we want to do our bit.
More than 1,000 m² of solar panels
As of February 2024, illa Carlemany has 475 solar panels installed on the side of the building. This is one of the largest private solar power systems in the centre of Andorra, with a total surface area of 1,127 m2. The installation was carried out from late 2023 to January 2024, despite these being the coldest and most challenging months for outdoor work.
In its first 21 days of operation, during 8–29 February 2024, the system already produced 13,108kWh, saving six tonnes of CO2, or the equivalent of planting 400 trees.
Based on solar radiation data provided by PVGIS (Photovoltaic Geographical Information System EU), the annual energy generation forecast for this solar power system is 301,580.95kWh. Maximum energy production is expected throughout May, June and July, while the lowest figures naturally correspond to the winter months.
A strong push for electric vehicles
The undercover car park at illa Carlemany shopping centre was one of the first to be equipped with charge points for electric vehicles, in collaboration with the national electricity company FEDA and the Porsche and Tesla brands. The initiative has proved successful, which is why the centre has been happy to make an even greater commitment to EV technology.
Since the end of 2023, the shopping centre offers a total of 24 charge points for electric vehicles. Most are located inside the car park and are suitable for all electric vehicle models, while dedicated spaces and devices remain available for the Porsche and Tesla brands. Between the indoor and outdoor parking areas, FEDA retains its own parking area.
Reduce, respect, and save
Christmas decorations at illa Carlemany always make use of LED lights, thus avoiding a huge increase in energy consumption at this time. Moreover, when the Christmas lighting inside the shopping centre is switched on, other lighting that is usually necessary can be dispensed with. All together, and though it may appear to the contrary, the goal is to strike a balance between offering the spectacle of Christmas while also controlling and balancing our energy consumption.
In addition, to reduce overall energy consumption and costs, for some time now the outdoor car park lighting is switched off at midnight, and lighting mechanisms with motion sensors have been installed in the indoor car park, which has resulted in 30% less electricity consumption per year in this area.
A similar reduction in energy consumption has been achieved by permanently switching off the lighting on the upper overhang of the façade, and by limiting the operation time of other exterior lighting, finding a balance between the commercial functions of the centre and the night-time habits of local residents and visiting tourists, and taking decisive action to avoid being wasteful.
The progressive implementation of LED lights throughout the centre, the most innovative and technologically advanced products available on the market, temperature sensors spread around the shopping centre that enable full compliance with directives on air conditioning of public spaces at all times, and the use of the natural cooling system with which the centre is equipped – by which outside air is used to cool certain areas – demonstrate illa Carlemany’s enduring commitment and belief that it all adds up to a greener future.
