Andorra is a country for skiing, nature, shopping and good restaurants; yet it’s also a place with a vast supply of culture, including music, theatre and dance company performances, and beautiful examples of the Pyrenean Romanesque, as well as prestigious high-quality museums and temporary art exhibitions.

Unfortunately, due to our present confinement, we cannot enjoy these creative and cultural resources in person. Nevertheless, the social media are now bringing them to us. Thanks to an initiative of the Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Action Department, we now have internet access to the exhibition “Joan Monegal: Aesthetic symbolism” (“Joan Monegal. El simbolisme estètic”), which was supposed to be displayed in the Artalroc exhibition hall, a government-managed cultural facility.

This display provides insight to the vast creativity and rich artistic language of Joan Monegal Castells. Originally from the city of Manresa, this artist found in the Andorra of the 1960s the ideal place to develop the most prolific and mature part of his work.

This 40-piece exhibit essentially forms a journey through the artist’s key works. Featured here are refined paintings with symbolic details, a personal and genuine language based on the interplay of shapes within a geometric aesthetic, the expressiveness of his pictorial technique and his integrating glazings, which embody the expression of his plastic language.
